For those of us with pets – or who have ever had a beloved animal – these well-known words will resound with you. Who hasn’t felt their heart melt at the sight of a wagging tail in the hallway? Or a gentle rub of a cat’s soft face against your cheek? Or the cheeky head bob of a favourite rabbit, wondering where his next carrot is?
Our love of animals – be they furry, fluffy, feathery or scaly – dates back more than 15,000 years, when the domestication of dogs for hunting, protection and companionship first evolved.

Our love of animals – be they furry, fluffy, feathery or scaly – dates back more than 15,000 years, when the domestication of dogs for hunting, protection and companionship first evolved.
Over time, relationships between humans and animals developed into something much more than simply interaction. It was the start of emotional bonds – attachment and affection being at the heart of the relationship.
So it is that we, as humans, recognise our animals – our pets – to be fully-fledged members of our family. Not only do we keep them for companionship, but we nurture and love them as much as one of our own, allowing them to become an essential and integral part of our family.
This is why, when they die, we feel their loss so greatly. For some people, their pet may be the only family or companionship in their lives, so their passing can feel all the more acute.
As an accredited funeral celebrant for people, I am aware of how important it is for everyone to express their feelings and to say a fond farewell to a loved one. This should be no different for an adored family pet. Allowing for a gentle point of closure with a beloved animal means that you can begin to adjust and move forward.

For children, the loss of a pet may be their first experience of death, so it is important to allow younger ones the opportunity to participate and have a voice as part of the celebration of life.
As adults, we do all we can to ensure that our pet has the best ever quality of life while they are with us, so a proper funeral is a befitting next step for us to take on their behalf.
I can help you by creating a short service which may include prayers or poetry, readings or even symbolic rituals (such as planting a tree, lighting a candle or installing a sculpture) – as well as an opportunity for you, or your family members, to say a final goodbye to a much-loved member of the family.

I can help you by creating a short service which may include prayers or poetry, readings or even symbolic rituals (such as planting a tree, lighting a candle or installing a sculpture) – as well as an opportunity for you, or your family members, to say a final goodbye to a much-loved member of the family.
Starting with an initial chat, I would work with you to create a lovely ceremony to remember and honour your pet’s life. This service can take place at home, in a favourite spot – or even in another calming and peaceful environment, so that you have time to reminisce about their lives – shedding tears, yes, but no doubt also with some humour as you recall a pet’s antics.
The great gap in your life cannot be easily filled, so your memories are there to comfort you at a time of sadness.
So, why not honour their lifetime of devotion and companionship with a meaningful service – a fitting way to keep their cherished memory alive.
